Paralegal Continuing Education

Continuing legal education (CLE) is recommended in the field of law due to the fact that laws and rules are dynamic and ever-changing. There are many choices for paralegal CLE credits including; self paced programs, online courses, and live seminars. You can often select which format is the best for you.

The National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA) encourages paralegal continuing education. Many NFPA member associations make CLE credits mandatory. You will have to check with your association to learn the requirements.

Currently, the only state that makes paralegal continuing education mandatory is California, where registered paralegals are required to take 12 hours of CLE credits (to include 1 hour of ethics) every 2 years to remain in good standing.

In addition, paralegals who are recognized as PACE Registered Paralegals (those who have taken the PACE examination), must complet 12 hours of CLE credits (including 1 hour of ethics) every 2 years to continue claiming the PACE status. There are other professional paralegal groups which also require CLE credits to maintain their status as well.

Many law firms encourage and even pay for paralegal CLE credit. It is estimated that as high as 96% of all firms and legal departments in corporations pay for CLE.
