Paralegal Degree Online

There are no prerequisite qualifications for becoming a paralegal, or legal assistant as the role is also known. However, competition for jobs in this field is as fierce as it is anywhere else, hence for new entrants it has become more-or-less essential for them to attend a relevant course in order to give themselves an advantage.

The basic paralegal certificate course can be completed in a matter of months; however all the paralegal degree courses entail a substantial commitment of time. The Associated degree course takes 2 years, the Bachelor degree 3 years, and the Masters degree 4 years. An alternative to this, for a graduate in a closely related subject such as business or law, is to acquire the paralegal certificate which is intended as a ‘top up’, focusing as it does on developing professional skills in order to enhance job prospects at a higher level.

The choice of paralegal degree course is influenced by a number of factors. Since obtaining a qualification in the first place is a matter of getting an ‘edge’ over other candidates, the comparative aspect must be considered. There is no point either in aiming too low and always being overlooked - as might be the case in a large city where competition is fierce - or in aiming too high and effecting overkill in a small town where a paralegal Associate degree represents the pinnacle of intellectual achievement.

Other considerations are, of course, the ability of the student, the level of their ambition, the length of time for which it is possible or convenient for them to remain in education, and the funds they have at their disposal.

Full-time, residential education is a drain on time as well as on resources. In this area, however, as in so many others, online classes can represent a salvation. Their advantages are legion.

Firstly, online paralegal studies remove the dictates of geography in the selection of a school. Electronic communication works as well over a distance of a thousand miles as over a distance of a hundred. It offers flexibility of timing which may make all the difference to a student’s ability to keep other commitments, such as caring for a child or parent, or holding down a job. It may allow the student to work more at their own pace.

Unfortunately, approval by the American Bar Association (ABA) is reserved only for courses which have a traditional, face-to-face element incorporated in their program.

Some paralegal online degree courses in the US are, however, both well established and entirely online meaning the student never needs to step into a classroom. Examples of institutions which offer a range of online paralegal degrees are Everest University Online, Keiser University Campus Online, and Hodges University to name just a very few.

Despite being online, not all of the paralegal programs are available in all States. However there is already substantial choice both of institution and course, and this is set to increase as online education becomes ever more appropriate particularly at degree level.
