Immigration paralegals are frequently assigned clients with whom they stay in close contact with throughout the process of immigrating to the United States. This can make working as an immigration paralegal a highly rewarding field.
Imagine helping someone gain their green card and letting them know they can stay in the U.S. There is often a great deal of gratitude from the immigrant, especially when families are concerned. Many immigration paralegals spend more time with the client than the attorney does (due to high attorney fees). It can take a long time to help someone achieve the paperwork to stay in the U.S., therefore, immigration attorneys need to stay up on the current laws and help clients understand that immigration can take a long period of time. It often takes a calm personality to help clients be patient.
Language barriers may also add to the challenge of a job as an immigration paralegal. Interpreters are often used so it's not mandatory to speak several different languages when looking into this career path.
